We like to call this section “Ten smart questions to ask before hiring an appraiser or household sale company” or “A dummy’s guide to not getting ripped off on an appraisal or household sale.” If you’re concerned that you don’t know enough to make an informed decision in whom to hire, consider these questions to guide your decision making.
- What is the appraiser’s or household sale company’s experience in marketing my particular antiques and collectibles?
- Is the company knowledgeable of and connected to local antiques and collectibles dealers?
- Will the company take the time to determine which items would be best sold through international auction houses like Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Skinner? Will the company limit their marketing to the local area where sellers are at the mercy of the local economy versus wisely marketing the item globally via the Internet?
- Does your appraiser have established relationships with these must-know auction houses?
- Does the company have access to national publications and databases that track the current value of collectibles?
- Can the company produce documentation to prove the value of items for sale?
- How many staff members will the sale company bring in to assist with my sale?
- Does the company have an opinion on the best time of the year to schedule my particular sale?
- Will the company guarantee that upon completion of the sale the house will be broom clean with all unsold merchandise liquidated or donated?
- Can the company provide references for recently jobs completed?
